Section outline

The module comprises four main parts, each one contributing to an understanding of the aspects of the production process of price determination documents for Built Environment projects. The breakdown of this module is as follows:
Part 1 – Development of production plans for the preparation of documents.
Part 2 – Management of the preparation and production process.
Part 3 – Accuracy, completeness and other checks.
Part 4 – Finalisation and distribution of documentation.
-
Users intending to undertake the examination for this module are advised that this forms the primary material which is to be covered in depth and examined
-
The examination for this module assumes that the user has read all these articles which supplement the Study Guide
-
The assignments and examination for this module assumes that the user has read all these articles which supplement the Study Guide
-
This forum is provided for the use of Users to facilitate communication amongst them. The intention is not to provide a 'chat' function but to encourage Users to discuss issues related to the course that are of mutual interest - for example the sharing of information / views etc on an assignment.

Choose any significant-sized project in your office, preferably one that you are or have been involved in. Provide a detailed description of the project so that any person reading your submission can obtain a clear understanding of the type, scope and size of the project.
1. Discuss fully in detail the process that was followed in compiling the price determination document (BOQ or otherwise) for your chosen project with specific reference to:
-
The profile of the client
-
The role-players in the process, their relationship to the project and to each other
-
How the structure of the price determination document was determined (rationale employed)
-
The chosen standard method of measurement that was applied and why this was the case - were other methods considered?
-
The process followed to determine the level of resources required, time considerations and how the work was distributed amongst production participants
-
How cost and time management was undertaken
-
The activities executed in the pre-planning process
-
The format and technology applied in compiling the document
-
How the contract form of the project impacted on the compilation of the document
-
The interaction between your office and the contractors considered to be appointed for the project
2. Critically Identify any shortcomings in the production processes applied and indicate how these processes could be improved. It may well be that some of the above activities did not actually physically take place - in that case, critically discuss and evaluate the potential worth of their implementation.
Each student is required to compile a detailed report incorporating the above issues, to be submitted by Friday, 26th April 2024. Your submission will count for 30 % of the final total course mark.

The use of national Standardized Trade Preambles is now almost uniformly applied by quantity surveyors, other than those on the African continent. A copy of the document utilised in South Africa is attached for reference purposes. In most African nations, persons producing BOQ's often resort to "in-house" standard descriptions, with quality standards of the British Standards (BS) being applied where possible. Alternatively, as in the South African example, quality standards referred to are those developed by the national consultancy organisations in a country.
You may form groups of no more than 3 persons in undertaking this assignment - all team members will receive the same mark (Names of team members must be submitted as part of the Assignment), so be careful who you choose to work with - we suggest using the Module Inter-User forum for communication amongst yourselves in this regard. Each team is to choose 1 country where a team member resides / works for reference in this assignment.
Each submission is to comprise:
1. Where a national Standard / Model Trade Preamble is used, a copy of that document must be submitted for reference purposes. If you are unable to access such a document in the country where you reside / work, the South African Trade Preamble document should be used as the base template.
2. Scrutinise the template document and make note of all references to local quality standards (in the SA document, these are designated SANS standards). By online research and / or provision of material by senior mentors, replace the local standards reference (e.g. SANS numbers), by the appropriate equivalent British Standard (BS) if one exists.
3. Once quality standard references have been converted to BS standards, peruse the document for any clauses which do not reflect good construction practice in the specific country where you reside / work, and re-draft all such clauses to reflect 'good practice' in your country.
An electronic copy of your submission is to be submitted by Friday, 24th May 2024. Your submission will count for 30 % of the final total course mark.

This section provides a number of short video interviews with senior figures in the Quantity Surveying fraternity based in African countries other than South Africa. The intention is to provide expert, personal observations on quantity surveying practices and procedures which supplement the material supplied in the Module Study Guide which describes the situation as experienced in South Africa.
